Vocabulary Post
An artist of the floating world
1.figures
'Some of which he would open so that he could point out to me columns of densely packed figures.' (p42)
Ono think about when he was twelve, he really respect for reception rooms. He remember 'business meetings' between his father and him. When Ono's father being talking, his father show a 'business box', some notebook, and point out to Ono, wants Ono learn about family business. Figures in here is means Ono's values that are expressed in numbers, he just think there are many number and not clear, that means he don't like this 'business meetings.' I think in here, Ono first time talk about his father and family, we can know some his background, and we know he don't like business and Ono with his father didn't have good relationship.
2.Utter
'It seemed to me there was something unnaturally deliberate in the way my daughter uttered those words.' (p53)
Noriko talk with his father Ono about Jiro Miyake why they canceled marriage contract. Ono think about last time he meet with Jiro Miyake. Utter in here means Noriko say somethings with out thinking, but Ono think his daughter very unnaturally. I think in here, Noriko have some curious about reason why Miyake cancel the contract, and maybe she still love with Miyake, but it seems like Ono didn't like Miyake.

Ono thinks the way his daughter is speaking is unnaturally deliberate. My question is: What words did she say? If you look at the conversation just prior to this quote, Noriko says, "I wonder what it could have been to make them pull out like that." If she is being unnaturally deliberate here, what does that mean? For me, it's like someone eating a donut and saying, "I wonder if this is good for me." Perhaps it's a kind of lie disguised as casual thinking.
ReplyDeleteFeng -You are having a lot of trouble with verbs here: Noriko talks, Ono thinks, she still loves (Remember S!), Noriko has (not have), Miyake canceled (past tense). Also, Noriko is a woman, so she talks with HER father!
At first, thanks for giving me useful information about the novel. And I found some grammatical mistakes in your post. I knew that I also always make a tons of mistakes while I was writing. So~ I think maybe that is why I can find your mistake easily. For example~ as I did a lot, you are confused by time line and if you use a the third person singular, you should add 's' at the end of the verb. Ok~ lets go to next part. I hope that you should know the story rather than me.
ReplyDeleteYES , thanks for you point out...
