Abstraction: 1/28 Assignment

In our first class we discussed the review by Jerry Saltz of the Inventing Abstraction show at the MOMA.  We also looked at the show's website and talked about the interactive artist network and some of the basic ideas in the development of abstraction in Western art.

In the second class we talked about the photographer Julius Shulman.  He photographed mid-century Modernist architecture in California including the famous Case Study House #22.  For me, there was a strong connection between some of the architectural drawings I saw at the Inventing Abstraction show and designs that Shulman photographed because of the use of simplified lines and planes without decorative elements.

Before Monday 1/28*:
  • Find an article online or in print that discusses a connection between abstraction and art, architecture, and/or design.
  • Read the article and create a post about it on this blog.  Include a summary of the article and your opinion (an image is optional).
  • If the article is online, link to it, and if it is in print, bring it to class.
  • Don't forget to include a few new vocab words and to label the post with your name.
Due 1/28 for Lee, Jangwon, and Yunbae
Due 2/4 for Mark, Cheng, and Feng

  2. Yes! On Monday, you should be ready to share your article with a partner. It doesn't have to be very long, but I'd like you to find something that makes a connection to abstraction that is interesting to you. It could be a magazine article about art, architecture, or design.
