The contemporary art work that I choose is My Dog Can't Walk, its author is Tomokazu Matsugama. He is born in Japan. When he moved to New York, learn communications design at Pratt Institute, he is influenced by street art like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat ("Edo" 14). Matsuyama argues that "instead of following one style of art or art movement in my work, I want to mix different visual vocabularies, including ukiyo-e, street art, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, and so on." ("Edo" 14).
The art work My Dog Can't Walk used acrylic and mixed media on curved canvas. I focus on its bright color when I first saw it. Different with historical work his art work doesn't use too many lines to make shape, he uses surface. For example, historical work always drawing hair use lines, very tiny and regular lines, however, Matsuyama uses gradually colors or stripes. The historical art work Yokkaichi-Mie River made by Utagawa Hiroshige, it also shows expression of wind, but they are totally different style. It is a woodblock art work, and its color is not very brightly. The hat which be blown away in the art work, looks very funny, viewers could know how big the wind is.
I have seen a video about how to print woodblock painting. The artist print many times for one picture. Artists separate different color in an independent wood, and then print one by one. They should make sure all the tings in the correct place, and its size and shape same with the line. I really like the historical art work. Without high technology, artists used original way to make artwork successfully.
