Edo Pop

                                                                        Edo Pop
The Graphic Impact of Japanese Prints

Edo period is a fast develop time, the Ukiyo-e is reflects the rising modern life, and there are lot of great artists during Edo period, and very high level woodblock print technique ("Edo" 4). Now, modern artists continue to make art work reflect our live environment.I think it's good to see modern artists use different way to representation their feelings about world, but I have to say the old art works's skills and quality is better.

Kawaguchiko by Narahashi Asako, 2003

Narahsshi Asako's work "Kawaguchiko" is a photograph he took from Mount Fuji, while he was in vacation, he was into the sea and looks back the beach. It makes he related to his childhood memory. Floating in the sea and staying on beach like between reality and a dream for Narahsshi Asako (Asako 20). I like this work as Narahsshi Asako said when he was floating in the sea, the wave control him , water is a symbol of something uncontrollable(Asako 20).

Under the Wave off Kanagawa by Katushika Hokusai, 1831-34

Katushika Hokusai was a most famous Ukiyo-e artist, this Under the Wave off Kanagawa from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji ("Edo" 20). This woodblock print work use multiple different colors print, it is hard, the lines and shape also made very delicate and vivid. I was so impressed by Katushika Hokusai's skills. I think this work also about power of nature and  uncontrollable, but one different with Narahsshi Asako's work is the artist controlled his work, but Narahsshi Asako's work more depend on move of wave, different working process and materials.
