Vocab Floating World p. 143 - 165

1. nostalgia (noun)

  "I always feel a certain nostalgia now in recalling the city centre as it was in those days; the streets were not so filled with the noise of traffic, and the factories had yet to tkae the fragrance of seasonal blossoms from the night air." (145p)

  meaning: the activity of remembering a good time in the past.
  sentence: Mr Ono is thinking about good time when he was young and always hanging out with friends.

2. silhouette (noun)

   "I could see numerous silhouettes dancing behind the paper screens, and a singer's voice came drifting out through night to me." (146p)

  meaning: shadow or black shape of object that people can see against from light background.
  sentence: Mr Ono saw the shadow of visitors througth out the window of Mori-san's vila.

3. fatally flawed ()

  "Perhaps you'll feel the same one day for the work you've done here. Then he shook his head again, saying: But these are all fatally flawed, Ono." (149p)

  meaning: being damaged, mistake or spoiled by mistake.
  sentence:

4. transient/ transitory

  "But as for those pictures up there, they don't even hint at these transitory, illusory qualities."(150p)

  meaning: continuing for only short times.
  sentence: Mori-san thinks that artist can grab a beauty moment for short times.

5. easel (noun)

  "In the summer months, many of my colleagues would set up easels spaced out at points along the verandas, or else out in the yard itself, while others insisted on reserving large numbers of rooms because they liked to circulate from room to room according to the light." (161p)

  meaning: the object that you can put your painting while you are drawing.
  sentence: Many colleagues use it while they are drawing their painting.

6. traitor

  "'Ono-san,' he said, in a near whisper, 'you are a traitor. Now please excuse me'" (165p)

  meaning: someone who aren't loyal to their country.
  sentence: The Tortoise saw his recent works and thought that Ono-san did bad thing to country.
